Babies Bring People Together

I attended a baby shower for a friend of mine yesterday. Christin and I go waaaay back, to before my JV cheerleading days. She was the cute, coordinated, hip hop dancer who could do a backflip, I was the tall, awkward, gangly girl, strictly there to balance out the bottom of the pyramid. Her little Kyleigh Madison Oney is due in February, and I could not be more happy for this glowing mother to be.

Christin licks the frosting off baby shoes that topped her favorite Publix marble cake.

At the shower I got the chance to chat with several girls I knew from back in the day. A few I am still close to, a few I have grown apart from and wish I hadn’t, and a few I would only consider an aqcuaintance (even though of course we are facebook friends).

The talk of the day, besides complimenting Christin’s choice of dip, consisted largely  of who had just gotten married, who would be next to tie the knot, or who the shocking new couples were (she is with HIM!?! but she is 21 and he is balding!!). As a single gal constantly surrounded by the marriage (and now baby!) buzz, I sometimes feel that I lag behind the curve.

But the more I think about it, I consider myself lucky to be single at this stage in my life. It gives me an amazing sense of freedom knowing that when I graduate, I can go wherever I want, and don’t have to take into account my “other half” getting a job, liking the city I choose, or having to live apart from me.

Of course finding someone to spend my life with will always preoccupy at least a marginal part of my thoughts. But for now, or at least for this moment, I am ok just to worry about myself.
